The Indang Association of Persons with Disability, Inc. (IAPWDI) in collaboration with Gender and Development Resource Center (GADRC), conducted a seminar entitled “Sign Language Orientation” on June 17, 2022, at the Persons with Disability Affairs Office, Indang, Cavite. The activity, attended by 31 participants, aims to promote awareness about the indigenous sign language of Filipino.
Mr. Florian H. De Borja, president of the Indang Association of Persons with Disability, Inc. (IAPWDI) expressed his hearty welcome to all attendees, especially the resource speaker.
Ms. Anna Donna B. Nono, SPED teacher, Carmona ES BML SPED Center, Division of Cavite Province spoke on Filipino Sign Language (FSL). She briefly explained the salient features of Republic Act 11106 or the Filipino Sign Language Act that has been in effect since November 27, 2018. She went on to explain that the FSL is the natural sign language of Filipino deaf and an indigenous sign language for deaf adult communities. She also tackled the common misconceptions of FSL. Moreover, she discussed the parameters in FSL such as hand shapes, palm orientation, location, movement, and non-manual signals. To ensure participants attention, she conducted an activity that deals on the practices of creating hand gestures or sign language.
Ms. Raecel A. Estebat, in-charge for planning, monitoring and evaluation, GADRC showed an application, a project made by the students of CvSU Cavite City Campus that displays the different hand gestures that can be use when talking to deaf people afterwhich she went on to deliver the closing message. She expressed her appreciation to all the participants, as well as to the resource speaker.
